From December 3rd to December 7th 2018, students in Somerville will experience the thrill of learning computer programming! This amazing event is called the 'Hour of Code' and it will give our students the opportunity to learn the basics of computer science. Thank you for volunteering to help!
Volunteer for the 'Hour of Code'
Here is everything you need to know to volunteer for this event. Just follow these four steps and you'll be all set!
Step 1 - Register on the volunteer website
We have a registration form that you should complete to let us know that you're interested in volunteering.
Step 2 - Pick and school and choose date and times that you can volunteer.
Ideally, we would prefer that you commit at least a half or full day of volunteer time. However, the registration process lets you commit to even a single class if that's all you have time for.
Step 3 - All volunteers are required to complete a background check
For the safety of all students, all volunteers are required to submit a background check form. The form is very simple and requires a signature and photo identification to be valid. You can drop them off at any number of convenient locations in Somerville.
Step 4 - View all the orientation materials for the event
The 'Hour of Code' is absolutely a blast! Again, you don't need to be a computer expert to volunteer. In fact, last year we had volunteers from some of the best technology companies on the planet--Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Uber, and Amazon working alongside parents, teachers, and other community partners.
However, there are some logistics and expectations that you should be aware of. Our orientation materials tell you everything you need to know to make this a great experience for everyone!
